What if you
computer told you this: "You have the following reminders for today:
your Aunt Leena's birthday, take out the trash..."?
Move over Bill Gates, we've found your match. It's a
high-tech home that would make the Jetsons red with envy, and now
you can buy the software that powers it.
Hook up to
just one PC and you can control your backyard lights, Christmas
tree, stereo and television.
Kevin Horn from Improving
Tomorrow told us, "Right from the office computer you can log in
and say 'OK I want to set my thermostat to 78 degrees,' if you
want."
You can also get amped up with surveillance,
controlling several security cameras and motion sensors to keep
watch over your house whether you are home or not.
"If
something happens at your home you can have motion sensors here and
it continues text messages and let you know that something's
happening there," said Horn. "It takes a snapshot, and you can have
either just one camera or multiple cameras and it can rotate between
each one, and it takes a snapshot based on whatever time period you
want, and all of those images are available online."
The automated voice can remind you of errands you
have to run or let you know when someone is approaching the front
door. It will even search the internet for a schedule of your
favorite shows and remind you when they are about to come on.
This system
is easy to set up, too. Check this out: to connect a lamp to the
network, just plug it into one of the modules and plug that into an
outlet. Then it will show up on the computer screen for you to play
with.
The software itself will cost you around $200 and
each module runs just under $20, but at least you don't have to fork
$40 billion like Mr. Microsoft to make it a high-tech reality.
